World's 'Oldest Beer' Found In Shipwreck

 News, Oldest Beer     No comments

First there was the discovery of dozens of bottles of 200-year-old champagne, but now salvage divers have recovered what they believe to be the world's oldest beer, taking advertisers' notion of 'drinkability' to another level.

The shipwrecked cargo of champagne and beer is believed to date from between 1800 and 1830.Though the effort to lift the reserve of champagne had just ended, researchers uncovered a small collection of bottled beer on Wednesday from the same shipwreck south of the autonomous Aland Islands in the Baltic Sea.

"At the moment, we believe that these are by far the world's oldest bottles of beer," Rainer Juslin, permanent secretary of the island's ministry of education, science and culture, told CNN on Friday via telephone from Mariehamn, the capital of the Aland Islands.

"It seems that we have not only salvaged the oldest champagne in the world, but also the oldest still drinkable beer. The culture in the beer is still living."

Nokia's New CEO : Stephen Elop

Nokia is changing CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasavuo, who was not capable to address the phone-maker's loss of the smartphone crown so far. Stephen Elop, who worked with Microsoft Corp, is joining Nokia in the place of Olli-Pekka Kallasavuo. Nokia couldn't compete with iPhone, Android, RIM in making of smartphones in last 5 years.

Mr.Elop said "My role as leader of Nokia is to lead this team through the period of change, take the organization through this period of disruption…to meet the needs of its customers, while delivering superior financial performance,” Mr. Elop said at a news conference in Helsinki, reports the WSJ" in Helsinki.

Mr.Elop was working in Microsoft Corp as a Head of business division. He starts on September 21, at a tricky time – Nokia World  (the firm’s annual talkfest London) is only next week so he will be unable to make a Steve-jobs-like entrance onto the stage and set a new tone for the organization.

Quran burning an al-Qaida 'recruitment bonanza': Obama

al-qaida, News, quran burning     No comments

Official presidential portrait of Barack Obama...Image via Wikipedia
WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama said on Thursday that plans by a Florida church to burn Quran on the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks could lead to a "recruitment bonanza" for al-Qaida.

"You know, you could have serious violence in places like Pakistan or Afghanistan," Obama told ABC television in an interview.

"This is a recruitment bonanza for Al Qaeda," Obama said.

"This could increase the recruitment of individuals who'd be willing to blow themselves up in American cities, or European cities," he said.

"I just hope that... he's someone who's motivated by his faith," said Obama, who slammed the plans to burn the Islamic holy book as "destructive" and dangerous.

The president's remarks came on top of global outrage against the plans of the tiny Dove World Outreach Center, a small church in Gainesville, Florida, to go ahead with the Quran burning.

CHICAGO, IL – Another UFO sighting has fueled speculation that we are not alone!
A UFO sighting from 2007 has been re-ignited to top new today. The sighting took place at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport and has been mired in controversy – as is the case with any UFO sighting. Whether real or not is debatable – but two items are helping the incident draw renewed news interest today.

An unedited pre-interview discussion of the sighting from 2007 has surfaced. The conversation is between Jon Hilkevitch (the Chicago Tribune transportation reporter who reported the Chicago UFO story) and Jim Wagner, a news anchor with CLTV, a 24 hour news channel in Oak Brook, Illinois.

Google 'gives' PoK to Pak again!

 News, Technology     No comments

Google2.jpg
Google Insights for Search, a tool which shows search volume patterns across specific regions, shows a truncated map of India with PoK missing from it
MUMBAI: The world’s most popular search engine, Google, seems to have gifted Pakistan occupied Kashmir to Pakistan once again. Google Insights for Search, a tool which shows search volume patterns across specific regions, shows a truncated map of India with PoK missing from it.

TOI discussed the matter with Google India and received an email statement from the spokesperson, saying, “We are looking into the issue and will alert the relevant product group for further action.”

This isn’t the first time that Google has goofed up when it comes to the map of India. “A few months ago Google Analytics, a statistics tool for websites, showed a similar map of India with PoK marked in Pakistan’s territory,” said a product manager of a leading website.

And, in 2005, Google Earth made headlines over its political map of the sub-continent, which had a clearly defined boundary between Pakistan and India with PoK on the Pakistani side of the map.

Pakistan isn’t the only area over which Google’s maps have caused a stir. A year ago, Google’s satellite maps created an uproar across India as they showed parts of Arunachal Pradesh marked in Mandarin instead Hindi or English, which made them appear as if they were part of China.

Google’s maps are a deviation from the ones published by the Survey of India. “There has been no change in the map of India since 1947. If there is any site with a different image of the map of India, and it is brought to our notice, we will take action against them,” a Survey of India official said from Dehradun.

“It is wrong of Google to show PoK as part of Pakistan. If Google did not want to show it as part of India, it could have been shown it as a disputed territory. The Pakistani constitution does not recognise PoK as part of Pakistan, while India has 25 assembly seats reserved in the J&K assembly for PoK,’’ says Vijay Bakaya, ex-J&K chief secretary.

Love Parade Stampede Kills 19 at German Music Festival

 News     No comments

Love Parade Stampede Kills 19 at German Music Festival – 19 people were killed, and 80 were injured in a stampede at the Love Parade techno musical festival in Duisburg, Germany, according to official reports.
Rescue workers had to fight through crowds and compete for attention with music that continued to play throughout the incident. The rescue teams tried to clear the road, and shouted directions through loudspeakers but were ultimately unable to yell above the music that was playing.

The incident occurred when panic broke out in a crowd of people who were walking through a 600 meter-long tunnel that led towards the festival. Rescue workers could be seen trying to help victims who were injured in the stampede in the tunnel in the aftermath of the event.
Witnesses said that people had fallen in the crowd, and were incidentally trampled in the stampede. Injured and dead laid on the floor in the wake of the stampede. The incident will undoubtedly force the festival organizers to take an increased look at security to ensure that an incident like this one does not happen again.

“Considering all the security aspects, the crisis staff of the city decided not to immediately end the festival,” said Duisburg security official Wolfgang Rabe. He went on to say that the decision was made to avoid more panic.

A number of officials spoke about the incident, including German president Christian Wulff who said that the event was “dreadful.” It is not currently clear what may have caused the panic in the first place. The ensuing stampede caused 19 people to be killed, and 80 more to be injured as they were trampled in a tunnel.

 News     No comments

Seven children were killed after a class mate opened fire at a school in southern Finland earlier today just hours before posting a video on YouTube predicting the massacre there.
Five boys, two girls and school principal were killed.

The gunman walked through Jokela High School firing into classroom after classroom with a .22-caliber handgun, is now in hospital after wounding himself in the head.

The YouTube video, set to a hard-driving song called “Stray Bullet,” shows a still photo of a low building that appears to be Jokela High School. The photo breaks apart to reveal a red-tinted picture of a man pointing a handgun at the camera.

Ahmadinejad denies aiding Taliban, wants US & NATO forces out of Afghanistan

 News     No comments

TEHRAN. With the President of Iran, Mahmoud Ah...Image via Wikipedia
London, July 27 (ANI): Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has denied allegations that the nation is aiding the Taliban in its fight against the Afghan Government and the US-led coalition troops.

"We do not support any group, we just and only support the Afghan people and want to strengthen security in the country,” he told CBS News in an interview.

“The root cause is related to the intervention of the United States and NATO and we think Afghan people should run their own country,” he added.

Leaked US documents had implicated Iran for its involvement in training and arming the Taliban in Afghanistan. The documents released by a website ‘Wikileaks’ have claimed that besides, Pakistan, Iranian officials train and supply arms and ammunitions to the Taliban.

He further warned the European Union against imposing sanctions against his country, saying that Iran possess a huge population with vast and rich resources to overcome old problems.

"I think the policies by the Europeans and the Americans are ridiculous. They think they are going to influence the life of the Iranian society. In fact, they”re imposing sanctions against themselves,” Ahmadinejad said.
“Iran is a great nation with a great population. We have vast and rich resources and it”s very much easy for us to overcome old problems," he added.

BP replaces CEO Hayward, makes record loss

 News     No comments

SHARM EL SHEIKH/EGYPT, 19MAY08 - Tony Hayward,...Image via Wikipedia
LONDON – BP's embattled Chief Executive Officer Tony Hayward will be replaced by American Robert Dudley on Oct. 1, the company said Tuesday, as it reported a record quarterly loss and set aside $32.2 billion to cover the costs of the devastating Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

BP said the decision to replace Hayward, 53, with the company's first ever non-British CEO was made by mutual agreement. In a mark of faith in its outgoing leader, BP said it planned to recommend him for a non-executive board position at its Russian joint venture and will pay him 1.045 million pounds ($1.6 million), a year's salary, in lieu of notice.

"The BP board is deeply saddened to lose a CEO whose success over some three years in driving the performance of the company was so widely and deservedly admired," BP Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg said in a statement accompanying the quarterly earnings update.

Svanberg said the April 20 explosion of the Macondo well on the Deepwater Horizon platform run by BP in the Gulf of Mexico has been a "watershed incident" for the company.

"BP remains a strong business with fine assets, excellent people and a vital role to play in meeting the world's energy needs," he said. "But it will be a different company going forward, requiring fresh leadership supported by robust governance and a very engaged board."

iPhone jailbreak becomes legal

 iPhone, News, Technology     No comments

Image representing iPhone 3G as depicted in Cr...Image via CrunchBase
WASHINGTON: New government rules announced on Monday will allow iPhone users to unlock, or "jailbreak," their phones without violating the law.

The amendments to the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act will allow users to run third-party applications on their iPhones that have not been approved by Apple.

Apple had objected to the changes, stating that the running of unauthorized programmes on the popular mobile device could lead to potential problems with the smartphone.

But the company will still be allowed to outlaw such actions on the terms of service agreements that users must sign when buying the phone.

The decision by the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress also allows consumers to unlock other mobile phones to run third party applications and to enable the devices to work with multiple carriers.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, which pressed the Copyright Office to relax its rules on mobile phone use, welcomed the move saying that the new rulings take "unprecedented new strides towards protecting more consumers and artists."

BP says no decisions have been made on changing management

 News     No comments

Tony Hayward CrackingImage by Truthout.org via Flickr
London, England (CNN) -- No final decision had been made regarding whether embattled CEO Tony Haward will leave BP, the company said in a statement Monday morning.

"BP notes the press speculation over the weekend regarding potential changes to management and the charge for the costs of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. BP confirms that no final decision has been made on these matters," the statement said.

The statement, which did not mention Hayward by name, said "any decisions will be announced as appropriate," noting that BP's board would meet Monday night ahead of the announcement of its second quarter earnings.

Despite widespread media reports that Hayward was on the verge of leaving, BP said Sunday that he still had the company's support.

"Tony Hayward remains our chief executive and has the full support of the board and senior management," company spokesman Mark Salt told CNN.

Hayward has been in the crosshairs of criticism over his handling of the underwater oil gusher in the Gulf of Mexico ever since the BP-contracted Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in April, killing 11 people and creating the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

Could American take over Britain's BP?

 News     No comments

SHARM EL SHEIKH/EGYPT, 19MAY08 - Tony Hayward,...Image via Wikipedia
NEW ORLEANS – The man overseeing the much-maligned response by BP PLC to the Gulf oil spill crisis is the likely choice to replace gaffe-prone Tony Hayward to run the company and would become the first American to ever head the oil giant.

A senior U.S. government official said Sunday that Hayward is on his way out but didn't know who would be his successor. The official was briefed on the decision last week and spoke on condition of anonymity because an announcement had not been made. An official announcement could come as early as Monday.

One of the most likely replacements would be Bob Dudley, BP's managing director, who spent part of his boyhood in Mississippi and has been running the day-to-day oil response since June. He would be the first American to head BP PLC since it was founded as the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. in 1909, according to a spokesman.

There also has been speculation that BP could tap Iain Conn, a Scot who runs BP's refining and marketing arm and also serves on BP's board of directors. BP's board would have to approve a change in company leadership.

To analysts and Gulf residents, it would be a welcome change for a company that has been criticized as being out of touch with the concerns of U.S. fishermen, tourists and residents affected by the catastrophe.
"He's a very good delegator," Oppenheimer & Co. senior analyst Fadel Gheit said of the 54-year-old Dudley.

D.C. rattled by area's largest recorded earthquake

Earthquake, Maryland, News, USA     No comments

Washington and Vicinity.Image by uconnlibrariesmagic via Flickr
WASHINGTON — The largest earthquake ever recorded near the capital rattled Washington, D.C., early Friday, waking many residents but causing no reported damage.

The quake hit at 5:04 a.m. ET with a magnitude of 3.6, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was centered near Rockville, Md., the USGS said.

NBC News reported that the quake was felt in the D.C.-area, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Amy Vaughn, a spokeswoman for USGS, told NBC station WRC that the quake was the largest recorded within 50 kilometers (31 miles) of Washington since a database was created in 1974.
The previous record within that time period was a 2.6 magnitude temblor in 1990.
"So this is pretty significant for your area," Vaughn told WRC-TV.
The area's last quake — with a magnitude of 2.0 — occurred in May 2008.

Chupacabras Found in Texas…

 Chupacabras, News, USA     No comments

A mythological creature has been found in Texas. A rancher in Hood County, Texas, killed one of the  evil looking canines that some say look a lot like the mysterious Chupacabra.
“I’m not sure on that part. All I know is, it wasn’t normal,” said Animal Control Office Frank Hackett. “It was ugly, real ugly. I’m not going to tell no lie on that one.”

Asylum reports that another Chupacabra was killed earlier in the week in Hood County. The animals will undergo DNA testing to determine what they really are.
The Chupacabra, or the goat sucker, is a legendary vampire like dog. The Chupacabra is known to suck the blood of cattle animals like cows and goats.

Indians in U.S., other countries to get tax concession

indians, News, NRI, tax     No comments

New Delhi: It is what you may call charity with benefit. Indians staying in the U.S. could in next three months avail tax concession on the money they will spend on social welfare projects at their native places in India.

Under the 'India Development Foundation for Overseas Indians', an initiative of Ministry of Overseas Indians, they will get tax exemption if they want to build schools, primary health centres and other infrastructure in their villages and places of origin in India.

The Ministry has already started the process of registering the foundation in the US and it will be in place in next three months, Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi told PTI in an interview.

After the US, the ministry will register the foundation in other countries, including the UK and the Gulf. According to official data, there are about 24 million Indians overseas.

The foundation, a 'not-for-profit' trust being set up under the Indian Trust Act, 1882, by the Ministry, will be the nodal agency to implement the projects across the country in cooperation with state governments and selected NGOs.

Designed to help in rural infrastructure development, the minister said his ministry would not only target millionaires or rich NRIs for contribution but the average Indian diaspora who want to give back to the society.
