Recently YouTube introduced a new mobile feature that will encourage its user to watch more videos on a computer screen with a better quality and makes you feel like watching television. Yes, YouTube has been trying to dominate your living room with its newly launched feature called YouTube Leanback.
The YouTube Leanback is specially designed for consumers and will make them to just sit back, relax and enjoy watching video one after the other. It is as easy as watching television at the comfort of your own living room.
This Google-owned video sharing site first announced Leanback in May upon the announcement of Google TV at the Google I/O conference. Google TV in cooperation with Sony, Intel and Logitech combines the internet with television programming giving a TV-like experience on the computer. The YouTube Leanback will be integrated with Google TV and designed to enhance effectiveness of video playback.
Leanback turns out to be an improved version of YouTube XL which was launched in June, 2009. The YouTube XL is a feature that also allows live video watching which is optimized for bigger screen. But according to its users it failed to give that natural experience that the Leanback was able to provide.
The YouTube Leanback which is available at youtube.com/leanback and comes with a very easy and simple design. Anybody can be able to figure out and learn the basics in just a few seconds. Upon logging on to the site, a selection of videos will already start playing based on the user’s desired settings and preferences. The arrow keys act as controls instead of a mouse and basically functions as follows:
- Down Button – opens up the navigation menu where you can browse videos based on given categories
- Up – opens up a quick search box
- Right – skip to the next video in the playlist
- Left – return to the previous video in the playlist
Just like a cable channel, Leanback will play videos in full screen and high definition continuously. It’s really easy as watching TV, no need to click, search and browse. The launching of YouTube Leanback is part of Google’s goal to reach more people and its attempt to probably “conquer” every living room. Definitely, this will not be an easy task because most people stay to watch TV for 3-5 hours as compared with watching videos over YouTube which only takes less than 2 hours on the average.
Whether the Leanback will be able to compete with the traditional TV shows is a question to be answered in the future. Whatever it is, it seems that YouTube has provided great improvements for its loyal users worldwide with the launching of YouTube Leanback.
