Wipro business grows 300 percent in West Asia, plans extra push

 IT News     No comments

Wipro is planning to step up support for the Arabic language at near-shore centres

Wipro's West Asian software business grew by almost 300 percent in the 2008-09 financial year. With this, nearly three percent of the company's global IT business comes from the region. Wipro's software business stood at Rs 4,932 crore in the last financial year. To further increase its returns from West Asia, a region largely unaffected by recession thanks to its oil wells, Wipro is now trying to step up its support for the Arabic language by setting up helpdesk operations at near-shore centres manned by locals.

With recessionary winds still blowing over the United States and Europe, the stable West Asian markets have come to the rescue of many Indian IT firms. If one wonders why West Asia still contributes only three percent despite the consistent growth, one has to understand the dynamics of the region.

Managed services and outsourcing market in the region is still nascent. "Regional customers still like to see work delivered 'in front of their eyes' and are uncomfortable with offshoring and the remote model of service delivery," Anand Sankaran, senior vice president & business head (India & West Asia) Wipro.
