Green IT services is expected to grow at 60 percent per year and reach $4.8 billion by 2013 - Forrester
Green IT may have started off as a fad, but companies such as Infosys, Wipro, TCS, HCL and IBM are now cashing in on it, providing value-added services to their clients. The market for green IT services is expected to grow at 60 percent per year and reach $4.8 billion by 2013, according to research firm Forrester.
While most IT firms have long had their own in-house green IT practice, they are now offering solutions to their clients, both global and Indian. Industries such as manufacturing, energy and telecom are keen to cut power costs and are interested in buying green IT services from their IT vendors.
Infosys helps its clients improve the efficiency of its supply chain by reducing costs related to transportation, which is also a source of greenhouse gas emissions. Wipro has designed a smart meter for its clients in the utility space, which will help them use power during non-peak time and feed surplus power into the grids. This helps clients save on costs as power is more economical during non-peak hours. "We are trying to build sustainability architecture with the client and then work these sustenance issues into IT solutions," said Wipro's VP Brij Sethi. Over the past three years, HCL Technologies has helped its clients save 11,334 KW in a year through green data centres. This is equivalent to 22,500 cars off the highway, planting of three lakh trees and energy cost savings of $10 million every year.
