For the young boy who sells mangoes, but doesn?t know what?s happening around the world and for the elderly couple who miss their children who are abroad, Google India has come up with a solution. The company is going to various neighbourhoods and teaching people how to use the Internet, that too in their own language. After success in Tamil Nadu, Google India on Monday launched its Internet Bus tour in Karnataka.
The bus with computers with Internet connection will travel through 15 towns starting from Bangalore in the next 50 days. The campaign is aimed at people with limited knowledge and exposure to the internet. It will travel to places such as Kolar, Mandya, Mysore, Bengaluru, Hassan, Arsikere, Shimoga, Bhadravati, Chikmanglur, Tumkur, Chitradurga, Davangere, Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum, Gadag and Hospet.
?The bus tour in Tamil Nadu was a big learning experience for us and it was inspiring to see that people wanted to know about the Internet and share their needs with us. This reinforced our belief that awareness is a key challenge in the growth of the Internet in India,? said Prasad Ram, head of Google research and development, India. A young business-man, who dropped out of high school in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, said, ?I visited the Google Internet Bus when it came to my town in February this year. Since then, I have found a way to improve my knowledge of the stock market.?
Google also has a community in Orkut where people in favour of the bus have come together. They are finding ways to spread the word in areas where the Internet is still rare. The bus will focus on four themes ? information, communication, entertainment and education. It will also show videos that explain how even with basic knowledge of the Internet, people can make their everyday lives simpler.
It will also teach people how to use Google?s search engine, email, social networking, online maps and mobile.
