It seems like every year, a new virus threatens to go all "Outbreak" on us. Yet, even in 2009, as the H1N1 flu (aka "Swine Flu") makes headlines, people still break out those same paper masks that look too flimsy to protect us from anything. Don't we have anything better?
You probably can't afford the fancy thermographic devices officials are using at airports to determine if your houseguest is running a fever, but you may be able to consider the following ideas.
For one thing, there's the Nano UV Disinfectant Scanner (image above). Just wave the cell-phone sized device for ten seconds over whatever object or surface you want to disinfect, and the ultraviolet light kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. $79.95 at www.zadro.biz.
Hunter Fan is promoting their Argenus Air Sterilizer as another way to combat Swine Flu. They claim their device captures and kills 99.97% of airborne microbes by drawing them through a "powerful force field of electrical energy." They're offering a free 60-day trial, and free replacement filters for the life of the product. The unit costs six monthly installments of $99.90.
Those looking for a cheaper, low-tech option may be interested in the keychain-sized "Handler," which features a metal hook coated with a "antimicrobial silver nano-particle solution" so one can open door handles, press buttons, and lift faucet levers in public facilities without having to touch them with their hands. $10.95 plus shipping and handling at www.handlerusa.com.
These items won't cure you, but they may keep viruses away. Stay healthy out there, and for goodness sake, don't visit any Mexican pig farms.
