Having a unique skill or passion, pursuing it and devoting ample time towards honing it, is a daunting task, especially when you already have a demanding job profile. Yasmin Taj meets three professionals who have managed to enhance and pursue their passions, irrespective of their busy schedules
Peeping into human minds
An entrepreneur with a passion for hypnotherapy! Sounds weird, right' But GN Praveena, CEO & chief knowledge sharer, Malola Mind Mentors Pvt. Ltd, fits the bill perfectly. Along with having a Masters in Computer Applications and Executive Program in Business Management from IIM, she is a certified neuro linguistic programming practitioner and a certified hypnotherapist. Talking about her unique interest in hypnotherapy, Praveena says, 'If I have to just list one unique talent, it's my ability to touch lives through my delivery. I have set up my venture to make my passion turn into reality. I did possess certain natural abilities; however, a formal training helped me hone such natural abilities to a greater extent.'
Taking out time to devote to a passion from crazy work schedules is certainly no cakewalk. But Praveena asserts that she chose a career that was in line with her passion and also aims at turning her passion into a full-time career. According to her, 'It's a very small percentage of people whose career is in line with their passion. It's highly important to enjoy what we do in life; and making a career out of what we are passionate about, makes us enjoy every moment,' she states. She concludes with a wise piece of advice and says, 'Dream big, chase it, make your passion come real with complete faith in yourself and your dreams."
A 'cat'ty affair
Milind Naik, CEO, Pappilon Software Solutions Pvt Ltd., an engineer and a management graduate from Mumbai loves animals and has taken up breeding of cats as a full time passion. 'I love animals since childhood. I used to get stray dogs home, catch fishes in the local pond and get a stray snake home. Currently, I have a St Bernard and a Golden Retriever and 7 cats,' expresses Naik.
Talking about how he got into the habit of keeping cats, Naik shares, 'We once came across a person who was shifting base back to the US and was looking for a family who could take care of his pet; that was when we got Cuddles, our first cat. In a month, we got so attached to her that we had to get a mate for her to expand her family. We also then locally purchased various breeds like Punch Face Persians, Siamese, etc. We had close to 14 cats at a time and 6 dogs. We did extensive reading about each and every breed of cats, their temperaments, the flaws, etc.' Being at the helm of affairs in a big organisation requires a lot of time and effort. So, how does Naik manage to take out time for his pets' 'We have not had a single vacation in the past 14 years and our weekends are devoted to pets. If given a choice between my work and my passion, I would go with my passion and we are working towards it. We would like to retire and stay in the countryside taking care of animals,' he avers.
These people go on to prove that it is not just about having a unique skill or passion, but having the determination to follow it and pursue it with full dedication is what that matters.
